Young Goodman Brown Questions

1) I think Hawthorne's purpose for writing this story was to show that even the nicest of people can have bad intentions. Many of the characters that were introduced in the story, at first were described as good Christians but then later the main character, young Goodman Brown, slowly started to discover the actual beliefs of many of the people he would consider "good Christians."

2) I think that the name Faith does fit Brown's wife because throughout the story, he is always thinking about his good wife, and how she is his only hope left when something bad happens.

3) I think the pink ribbons signify the sign of hope, just how during cancer awareness month, the pink ribbon signifies hope for all.

4) I think everything Brown witnessed was a dream because towards the end of the story it says,"had Goodman brown fallen asleep in the forest, and only dreamed a wild dream of a witch meeting?"

5) I think the old man was the devil tempting Goodman brown because he would for most of the story, be telling him lies about helping past family relatives.

6) I think the staff means in a way that if he take hold of it, he has fallen into the hands of the devil, and is now on his side.

7) If he didn't venture into the forest, Goodman brown would still be naive about the townspeople and his wife. He wouldn't believe that the people that surround him everyday, are bad people.
