Ready to read, Dr. Preston

When I first entered class at the beginning of the school year, I thought it was going to be like a usual class with the format of,"OK, get this syllabus signed and bring it back on Monday the latest." I didn't expect for the class to be able to decide how they want to learn this semester. Honestly, it really got me off guard but I enjoyed the thought of changing the learning environment a bit. When I first met Dr. Preston back in August, I thought he was going to go to work straight away as in paper and pencil, but when we, as a class, were give the option of learning online I was quite surprised and I was really excited. After choosing to be an open source learning environment, I couldn't wait to get started. The first weeks coming into class and getting used to writing in my journal everyday were kind of odd since I had never written in a journal before. When we had to memorize poetry, it was really hard for me to be able to memorize something and record it as well as post it online where others can see it when they want. After at least a month in, I got used to it and posting videos of myself reciting poetry online has become a normal thing for me to do now for and English class. When Dr, Preston mentioned the interviews, I was shocked. My way to be able to keep up was to practice and learn my answers to the heart so that I wouldn't be caught off guard. I was able to make up work by dedicating a day so that I would get everything done and i would be all caught up going back to class the next day. I am different now since I know how the class runs and I am able to understand what is happening. The experience the last four months really help me to be able to learn to communicate and express my opinion in a different way as well as be more confident within myself.

MY BRAIN ON THANKSGIVING BREAK

I was able to sustain my memory and learning momentum last week by doing homework that I was assigned, and also by doing some reading. I would watch videos on classes that I was struggling in and trying to understand the topic being explained to me. Overall, I believe that my Thanksgiving Break was really good.

RHETORICAL STRATEGIES PART 1

ETHOS
Focuses on the trust of the speaker
uses tone to understand character
LOGOS
Focuses on the message
uses evidence to support claim
PATHOS
Focuses on the attention of values and beliefs
is used for the audience's empathy
KIAROS
focuses on the timing on something
used to persuade people because it's what they must have

ANCIENT RHETORIC IN MODERN TIMES

I think that ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos make the arguments in the article more effective because they explain the main idea and make sure to explain it so that the audience is able to understand and grasp the message.

THE ETHNICAL CHALLENGES SELF DRIVING CARS WILL FACE EVERY DAY

One will need a lot more patience to teach or show a car how to tell when someone is crossing the street and how and when to take turns. Many people believe that in having self driving cars, it will just cause more of a problem since one will have to be even more careful when crossing or even just walking in general.

ANATOMY OF A PERSUASIVE ARGUMENT

ETHOS :

  • word in Greek meaning character
  • when using counterargument for an opposing side to explain an issue in why you are correct, you are using ethos
  • other times one may rely on reputation to be believed in
  • appeals to mental capacity for logic
PATHOS :
  • word in Greek meaning suffering
  • attention is focused on beliefs of the audience
  • used for the audiences capacity of empathy
  • appeals to imagination and feelings to help audience grasp argument
LOGOS :
  • word in Greek meaning word
  • focus is mainly on the message of something
  • also known as "appeal to reason"
  • points out clarity in the argument
  • uses data to support claim
KAIROS :
  • word in Greek meaning right time or opportunity
  • used mainly for ads in a way of the "right time"
  • could also be used as different ways to send email and other messages to different people
These terms can be used in an argument against parents to get what you want by telling them facts and providing evidence. Also, when your parents realize that you are right they won't be able to say no to you anymore.

SAME WORDS DIFFERENT PEOPLE

Two words that were discussed today were INDIVIDUALISM and TONE. At first my friend and I had different understanding of the word INDIVIDUALISM. I understood individualism as being alone without the help of anyone. After talking with my friend, I understood that it meant to be independent and start to become more into an adult.

THE ART OF HOSTING GOOD CONVERSATIONS ONLINE

- be kind
- start a conversation with everyone
- show authority
- always set a good example for others to follow
- help other people feel welcomed
- learn from your mistakes so that you won't mess up again
- set rules but don't be too strict
- stay out of drama
- address problem in private and not for everyone to know about
- don't take sides with anyone

MY DREAM WITHIN A DREAM

HOW I READ

My first impression when I read this article, were in how well the author used his choice of words and the author got their main idea through to us the audience. There are different types of amateurs for example professional ones and others that do professional jobs but aren't "qualified" for that job. In my opinion, people are capable of doing anything without the need of being professional on that specific thing.

HAVING THE TIME OF MY LIFE

Understanding my time use can help me improve in how much I can get done is a day. If I learn to manage my time wisely I believe that I would have more time to relax and not be stressed about school and tests.

FIRST IMPRESSION : ON SELF- RELIANCE

  • OUR ACTS OUR ANGELS ARE, OR GOOD OR ILL
  • SOMETHING ABOUT US AND ABOUT LIFE THAT GOES DEEPER IN THOUGHT
  • EMINENT: A RESPECTED PERSON, THE MASTER
  • ADMONITION: A WARNING, LECTURE
  • DO YOU THINK THAT WHAT YOU BELIEVE IS CORRECT, IS CORRECT FOR EVERYONE?
  • THE BELIEF THAT IS GENIUS
  • EMERSON IS TELLING US THAT WE HAVE A VOICE INSIDE OF US
  • HOW CAN YOU BE YOURSELF AND BE SOMEONE ELSE AT THE SAME TIME
  • TOIL: TO WORK
  • POINT IN LIFE COMES THAT ONLY CHAMPION, CAPTAIN OF YOUR WORK IS YOU
My first impression in the little section that was read and discussed in class, were of how we have to be true to ourselves and not try to please others. Perhaps what we believe is a right thing for us, may not be a good thing for somebody else

LITERATURE ANALYSIS #2

The book I read was, The Girl Who Chased Away Sorrow, By Ann Turner. At first, the thing that drew me to this book was the cover. When I saw it on the shelf in the library, the Picture caught my attention and I went to pick it off the shelf. I read the back and a few pages into chapter 1, and I really liked it that I had to take it with me and finish reading it. I hoped to experience the feeling that the character was describing and be able to picture the scenery as well. The thing that kept me reading past the first ten pages, was that the author gave details and and explained thoroughly was was occurring in the story and the way that she used her words, made me want to keep reading. My reading habits consist of me reading in the morning before I get ready for school, if I wake up early. Usually when I am getting ready to go to bed, I will listen to a reading of something random that pops up in my recommended on YouTube. If I have a book then I'll read out of it a few minutes before actually going to bed.

LET ME WALK YOU THROUGH THE PEDESTRIAN

It's a moonlit night in the year 2053, and and Leonard Mead, The Pedestrian, is taking a walk, like he usually does every night, through his unnamed city. As he walks through empty streets, he would look inside the houses and just see people sitting in front of the a television screen. Leonard Mead has walked the streets for ten years and he has never encountered another person walking, since everyone else stays inside their homes. The way he describes them as "grey phantoms" that live in "tombs", is quiet interesting since he is comparing them to the dead. The Pedestrian was enjoying the peace outside in the world an was taking it all in as any human would. As he continues to walk back to his house, The Pedestrian is stopped by a police car, mind you there is only one police car for the whole city. He is asked questions, and the police is trying to figure out why he outside walking instead of being inside his house like everyone else watching television. The police finds out that Leonard doesn't have a TV, he isn't married, lives by himself and that he was a writer when the world still cared about was was written. He is told to get inside the Police car, and as Leonard gets inside, he notices that the car is a robot, and that he is going to be taken to a psychiatric place because he is acting different from everyone else.

THE VALUE OF MY TIME

The time investments that I make today to help with my future are to listen to a movie play in the background while I have my eyes closed. I found this very soothing and help to calm my brain down and to take a break from school work. The time investments that I am trying to make for my future goals are to learn how to manage my time better and be able to deal with last minute time consuming problems.

STORY OF MY LIFE

An event that happened in my life, was just last week on Friday after school. I was called by my dad to go help him take a few things to a person in Nipomo. Me,not thinking much of it since we had done this before, agreed to go and so we went. When we arrived, I got off the car as usual, and when I turned around after closing the door, I notice two big dogs with red looking eyes just looking at me. I slowly open the car door again and get it, mind you I was frightened, and I decide to call my dad since he had left with to knock on the front door. After a while, I was assured by the dog owner that his dogs wouldn't attack me and that I'll be alright. I get convinced, and get off my dad's car again and help to unload the car. Out of the corner I can see one of the dogs getting close and I didn't see the owner around so I panicked. Around the corner I can see my dad making his way back up to the car and I make a run to safety, which is to hide behind my dad ( I know it sounds silly ). I strongly REGRET making that choice. Just as I am about to make it to where my dad was at, I felt the front paws of the dog on my back and I fall to the ground. The dog continues to bark and was about to bite my leg when I get covered by my dad and the owner comes out to scold his dog. Moral of the story, DON'T RUN AWAY FROM DOGS, YOU WILL BE ATTACKED.

SO THIS GUY GOES FOR A WALK

Ray Bradbury wrote "The Pedestrian" because he was describing the night and how nobody really walks outside anymore. He is also letting us know how the police reacted when they saw him just walking around to no real location and just walking for walking. What happened to him contributed to the plot of the story because it pretty much explains reality in how when you are walking around at night, it becomes very suspicious to the police because they think you are going to break a law, or you are going to meet up with someone.

INVESTING IN ME

After High School, I plan to work and save up my money to help me pay off  educational things. I also plan on having another place to save my money so that if I will ever need money for an emergency, I won't be taking any out of my educational funds.

LETTER TO A MENTOR DRAFT1

Dear Mentor,

My name is Yazmin S. and I am a Junior at Santa Maria High School. My dreams are to travel the world one day and to become a doctor. I plan on going to a 4-year university after high school and then enroll in medical school. I know that to be able to achieve this, I will need to be very focused and take a step at a time. This is the reason why I am looking for a mentor to guide me along the way.

HAWTHORNE & POE ON DREAMS

The authors use the idea of dreaming to make us think what is real by describing in detail the images they want to paint inside our minds, but then also letting us know that we are dreaming this image, because we don't see it, only imagine what it would look like. The elements that are seen in both pieces, is the element of imagination, because since both are talking about dreams, it is something you can only imagine.

FIRST IMPRESSION OF A DREAM

MY ESSAY ESSAY

Hawthorne communicates the theme by giving us a few different examples on how many people that surround us could be filled with evilness in their mind and hearts. Throughout the story, he uses different symbols like the pink ribbon that is in faith's hair. The way that he describes the characters paints images in the readers head whether in a good or bad way.

MY THESIS STATEMENT

The main point of my essay is to help others to understand and be able to see who are the good an bad people in your life. Many of your "most trusted friends" could be the ones that wish you the worst. If you think about it, can you really trust a person 100% ? Even your own parents may wish you to live a life far worst than theirs. But, that is something for you to think about. I think that it is easier to reflect on the story "Young Goodman Brown" with a prompt because you will have something to base your writing off of and not just write something that you aren't sure is correct.

Young Old Good Bad

I think Hawthorne wrote "Young Goodman Brown" to give us people that read it, an example of how many people in our lives can be seen as good, kind people, but actual are evil and not good for us to be close by. The power of the imagination is a strong one because if we think about something way too much, our minds start to imagine it and it can create really horrible images which might frighten us.

Young Goodman Brown Questions

1) I think Hawthorne's purpose for writing this story was to show that even the nicest of people can have bad intentions. Many of the characters that were introduced in the story, at first were described as good Christians but then later the main character, young Goodman Brown, slowly started to discover the actual beliefs of many of the people he would consider "good Christians."

2) I think that the name Faith does fit Brown's wife because throughout the story, he is always thinking about his good wife, and how she is his only hope left when something bad happens.

3) I think the pink ribbons signify the sign of hope, just how during cancer awareness month, the pink ribbon signifies hope for all.

4) I think everything Brown witnessed was a dream because towards the end of the story it says,"had Goodman brown fallen asleep in the forest, and only dreamed a wild dream of a witch meeting?"

5) I think the old man was the devil tempting Goodman brown because he would for most of the story, be telling him lies about helping past family relatives.

6) I think the staff means in a way that if he take hold of it, he has fallen into the hands of the devil, and is now on his side.

7) If he didn't venture into the forest, Goodman brown would still be naive about the townspeople and his wife. He wouldn't believe that the people that surround him everyday, are bad people.

Literature Analysis Book #1 Tending Roses by Lisa Wingate

1) What drew me to read this book was the title and the image on the front cover of the book. I saw it from a distance, and I wondered what it was. So I went close and read the description on the back, and I wanted to know all the details about how the character changed her mind and how she felt a connection with her grandmother. I expected to not be really interested in reading everything because in the beginning, it wasn't as interesting. After a few chapters in, the book became extremely interesting and I couldn't stop reading.

2) The thing that kept me reading past the first 10 pages, was that I must read at least 30 pages before I decide whether I want to keep reading it or not. I can't just decide if its interesting the first few pages because most authors don't start the rising climax until after a few pages of reading.

3) My reading habits are to read anywhere I can whether it is before class, in the car, or anywhere quiet. When the book is interesting enough, I will read until the end not caring of I have other things to do.

FIRST 50 PAGES, Tending Roses by Lisa Wingate

1) The plot of the novel,"Tending Roses" by Lisa Wingate, is about a couple going to the family farm for a vacation, but their actual intentions is to get the wife's grandmother ready for when the rest of the family comes over for Christmas to tell her that they are thinking of putting her into a nursing home and selling the family farm. Meanwhile, the husband's job calls him to let him know that they have lost an important contract with business people and that he has to call them to try to get the contract back. The wife is busy trying to make ends meet with the money that they have so that they can pay their hospital bills.

2) The theme of the novel is to live life everyday without needing to worry about problems and work. Cherish what you now have because you might end up regretting it later in your life.

3) I think that the author's morning routine is a calm one. She probably gets up and looks out her window at the land and think about her days work. Later, she might do some meditation and have a healthy breakfast that has some scrambled eggs with hash brown along with bacon and fresh orange juice. Some excerpts that painted this imagine in my mind, are how she describes the morning and setting sun as well as describing in detail the warm breeze and the detailed description of roses lining the house in the story.

4) A literary technique that helped me understand the theme was the way how the author was including the message in between the reading, instead of saying it towards the end of the book.

THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE

A way that I would select the most appropriate channel for my communication, is to always remember who I am writing too. If I am to write to my friends, I wouldn't really worry about errors that much and just write/type and send. If I were to be sending a message to a person I love, I would make sure that I express what I am feeling and be kind. Always remember to still make some sense and be sure to get your thoughts through onto paper or text.

HACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

What is this class about?
-This class is about learning how to write and learn better English.

What is the easiest part of this class?
-The easiest part of this class could be the journals since for the most part, I know what to write and I have an idea of what is expected of me.

What is the hardest part of this class?
-The hardest part of this class is sometimes the posts since I tend to fall behind on them and not do them on time.

What have you learned so far?
-So far I have learned how to think beyond my thinking box. I have to be more open minded to see what other options there.

What is your big question ?
- My big question is how does school expect us to be able to finish all the work assigned in one night? We students have a busy life besides school, and because of school work, many students have to stop doing outside of school activities and wait until our long breaks come around to relax.

BIG BROTHER'S FIRST IMPRESSION

When I started reading this, I had to go back and reread the first paragraph because I wasn't understanding it very well. Afterwards, I started to comprehend that it was about people making the English Language very difficult to understand and to communicate. If people don't make the English language as hard, many adults would be able to learn and communicate better with ease than needing to look or have someone to interpret for them.

HOW I READ

I prefer to read in a quiet place but outside not inside a building. I like to read that way because nature is much quieter than being inside a building with the AC running and people talking and things printing. I like to picture myself reading in an open land and view where I only see trees and grass and the only other noises would be the wind blowing against the leaves on trees, and the birds chirping in the distance. To me , that is how I prefer to be when reading a book. Now, since that is not really possible where I live, I like to plug in my earbuds to my phone, and put some relaxing music on with no words and changing rhythms. I’ll listen to sounds of nature, water running down a creek, maybe even the sounds of raindrops falling from the sky. This helps me concentrate. How do you prefer to read?

SO THIS GUY GOES FOR A WALK

My first impressions from the reading was that the story was similar to many fiction stories and of the story of Adam and Eve. The snake in both this story and Adam and Eve, was quiet mean and evil. Both stories were also very interesting in their own unique way.  The old man is telling Goodman brown all lot of good things about what he has done in the past and how nothing will go wrong just how the snake in Adam and Eve told Eve that nothing will go wrong and everything will be fine.

FOR THE WIN

Something that I feel that I have done well in this course is keeping up with the journals. If I start to see that I am falling behind, I'll go home and catch up on what I am missing so that I can turn it in on Friday completed. Also, I've been reading my book and I am surprised because usually I won't read what I'm assigned when they are assigned. I would wait and then read everything together and answer any questions that need to be answered.

I Ain't Got Time For This

My habits in time support my goals because in doing my homework and studying, it takes up most of my free time. By the time I finish everything, it would be very late and I need to sleep and let my body rest. Also, with memorizing things for most of my classes my brain would start to hurt. School just expects us students to be able to do all our work in one night and be able to turn in everything the next day. Yet, if we want to have a good job in life, sacrifices must be made.

The Earth on Turtle's Back

This story is a myth because it explains things that we don't understand. A Moral is a lesson that is being taught in the story. The moral of this story is about determination to keep trying and not give up even if its really hard and seems impossible. Techniques in the story are suspense, personification.

Today I was Thinking

While in class today, I was thinking about how life is very short and how us humans take advantage of everything that we have in the world. We are given everything and we don''t use our sources wisely. I was also thinking about how to answer the journal topic since I didn't really know how to answer it during class. What were you thinking today?

I Care About Your Understanding

Sometimes, I'll be walking to class and I will see a couple arguing. Yes, arguing in a relationship is normal. But when one walks away during the argument, it just makes matters worse. One person in the relationship has to be the mature one and let their partner cool down. If its meant to be, nothing will separate them. Being in a relationship means that you must TRUST EACH OTHER all the time. If you hear something about your partner, don't confront them with yelling instead, ask to talk just the two of you and let them know what you heard and LISTEN to what they have to say. I hope I was understood and I made my point clear.

The Making Of An Essay

When I am writing an essay, I don't really know how to start it for about 30 mins. Through out the day, I will start to get ideas and by the time I get home, I usually at least have an idea for the introduction paragraph and a body paragraph. Sometimes writing an essay can be frustrating because you have to provide evidence and explain your point. Having to write something under pressure can be frighting for many especially slow thinkers like me. At the end of it, you get this satisfying feeling that you were able to finish in the time that was given to you and now you get to relax.

Communication Strategies Of A Hacker

"The Mentors" tone effectively conveys his message by giving us the perspective of a teenager and how they feel when adults refer to us as all being "alike." When a teenager acts different, we are criticized for being different yet if we all act the "same", that is also wrong. Many teenagers don't know how to act because of this which is why most don't share their ideas and keep to themselves.

Getting to Know You

The importance of getting to know the people around you is so that you'll be able to form a team that you can work with to make something happen. Today's class experience was very fun. I didn't really know many people but conversations were pretty easy to start due to all of us trying to finish our scavenger hunt first. There were jokes being made and we all learned at least one thing about our class mates.

My Big Question

I have always wanted to know why do humans not care and take for granted what is given to us? Many people are becoming very ignorant towards the subject of Climate Change. If people started to care more, the world would be better and we wouldn't have to worry about huge fires and animals going extinct so quickly. I would like to solve the problem of global warming by starting with making a difference myself. Perhaps if others see a change, they will want to do it also and little by little the world will start to become a better place.

CONSCIENCE OF A HACKER

When I started to read the hacker, I wasn't really understanding what was being said. After a few lines in , I began to notice that the reading was talking about how all teenagers are " the same". Adults want teenagers to start to act like young adults, yet they are being treated like children and that confuses many teens. When a teenager figures out something big, older people don't really take many serious because they are still "kids" which means that they probably got the idea from someone else. Do you think you are a hacker?

Everything is a remix

Remix: taking something that already exists and editing it to make it into something new
-by combining, copying, transforming
- 3 basic elements:
   -domain knowledge(learning by speaking)
   - copying ( mimicking others exact moves )
-transformation ( taking something and making it better, might take time)

Today I Asked A Question

I don't always wonder about questions, and maybe that is because I am getting older and I can figure out most things on my own. While in class, my teacher, Dr. Preston, mentioned that learning is good for us and that if we learn a lot of things we have a better open mind. An example could be of when we are young and we are told by our parents that "we need to talk." You start to make a lot of different scenarios in your head and then you realize that all they wanted to say was that they are proud of your for doing well in school. As we get older we overthink a lot of things and that is why we stress, unlike little children that only worry about playing outside with their friends.

I Am Not Entitled To My Opinion?

When someone tells me that I am not entitled to my opinion, I would be really mad and upset. Why? Ever since we were small kids, sharing our ideas and opinions was like nothing. You talk and your friends agree even if the idea was not a great one. Then, you start to get older and adults and older kids tell you that there are only certain things that are right. You continue to grow and suddenly everything you say is not correct because it doesn't match what somebody else said and there is an endless circle of what is right and wrong. I wouldn't like to live in a place where only one thing is correct whether you agree or not. Wouldn't you want to be able to voice your opinion?

Now I Remember

The Strategy I used to memorize "Richard Cory" was repetition and grouping. I would repeat the first paragraph out loud and when I felt that I had it down, I would move onto the next paragraph. Once I thought that I had the next paragraph down, I would repeat the two paragraphs together until I had it solid. That is how I memorized "Richard Cory."

Training Like A Memory Champion

From the reading, I understood that there are different ways to memorize things. From grouping, to reciting, to writing things, to talking in front of the mirror. Everyone has a different way to remember things and as long as it gets the job done, every thing is good.

You are Not Entitled To Your Opinion

If you think real hard about it, you really aren't entitled to your opinion. Since we were young kids, we have been told that, "you have a right to say what you want or do what you want," then you grow up and adults tell you that you are wrong. Other times, we think that another person's argument is not valid just because it doesn't "match" what we think. We must respect other people's opinions and not be rude to them. You wouldn't like a person to be rude to you every time you have something to say. Be kind and listen to what they have to say. Who knows, maybe you'll change your mind on the topic being discussed.

A Second Helping Of The Socratic Seminar

  • "knowing your right" - something people should know and honor
  • Claiming the right to our own is not entitled to someone else's opinion
  • important to understand or own individual rights
  • En local parenti- the illegal principle to allow teachers to act like parents of students during school hours
  • claiming opinion to be right doesn't bring us closer to being right
  • giving your opinion- is not just saying what you think, but also you must provide evidence to prove your point

A Socratic Seminar

  • There are many different ways of love: materialistic, emotional, you name it.
  • If your partner cheats on you then they don't love you like they said they did.
  • People do things without thinking about the people they love.
  • Love can be blinding, painful and at the same time very sweet and with lots of happiness.
  • When taught about love at a young age you think about things you really like
    • favorite food
    • toys
    • shoes
    • movies etc..
  • Loving someone can make you vulnerable to them hurting you faster.
  • When loving someone you must trust them all the time.

The Right To Your Opinion

When people say, "I am entitled to my opinion," they mean that nobody has the right to tell them that their opinion is wrong and that it doesn't count. I understand what they mean by that since each and everyone one of us has something to say and it won't be the same as another person. You can wear whatever you want and yes, people may look at you weird but, they can't tell you that how you are dressed is wrong just because they don't like it. There are times when saying things aren't appropriate. For example, when people talk on the phone about lets say the president, they think they are in a "private" conversation with the person on the other line. Yet, if Secret Services hear something that maybe threatening to the president's life, they will hunt you down and that can't be a very happy place to be in. In my opinion, people are allowed to say and do things that they feel like doing, but they should also be careful in what they say on the phone or when out in public.

The Socratic Method

While I was reading this, I didn't really understand it at first. I had to read it a couple times before I started to comprehend what was being said. For The Socratic Method to work, people, or in this case, students and teachers, must communicate with each other about the subject that is being taught. Teachers must go more in depth with subjects and students must be able to connect the topic to their lives. Students will then be able to give feedback and ask questions. This method is a great way for students to understand what is being taught in class.

Hello there and Welcome :p

My name is Yazmin Santiago and I enjoy playing music. I am in the Santa Maria High School Marching Band and I am currently playing Cymbals. My first year of high school I played trombone. I joined the Jazz Band my sophomore year, and at first I didn't enjoy it much because I didn't know how to play the music "jazzy". After about two months in being in the class, I was starting to understand all the different ways to play music and it made my life a whole lot better. I currently am the Bass Guitar player. I hope you enjoyed learning a bit about who I am.
